OPINION - Letter to the Daily Mountain Eagle: Bob Woods is correct in the Daily Mountain Eagle's 14 October 2004 front page article about Corridor X. He said, "That interstate will mean nothing if we can't retain people to live here." Making Walker County attractive for homeowners and business owners is the primary goal of the newly formed Walker County Property Owners PAC. The PAC is interested in improving local ordinances and laws that promote healthy homeowner and business growth, especially in the Corridor X buffer zone. The November election is extremely important for many reasons. Silently and without fanfare or meaningful public debate, the "Corridor X Parkway Authority" secretly made its way onto the November 2 ballot. In the November 2 presidential election, Walker County voters will vote on Local Constitutional Amendment No. 1, naming the new authority and giving the new authority police enforcement powers. Officers and members of Walker County Property Owners PAC believe the newly contrived Corridor X Parkway Authority will stifle economic and business growth within the Corridor X buffer zone and unfairly penalize property owners. Contrary to Bob Woods statement, penalizing property owners is not in the best interest of retaining people to live in Walker County. The authority will control much more than businesses on Corridor X, asserting its heavy hand upon those Walker County citizens who live within the authority's jurisdiction, which we believe will grow to include all of Walker County. Home owners within the Corridor X buffer zone under the new authority's control will be losers. Going further in a major land and power grab, the new "Gestapo-like" authority will completely cut off and stifle property owners' ability to manage their property and homes. The Corridor X Parkway Authority will have unlimited power to preemptively veto any city ordinance and zoning law of any city in Walker County that disagrees with the authorities rules and regulations. Presently the Parkway Authority's nine members are unknown. The Parkway Authority's regulations will be written by the nine secret members AFTER the constitutional amendment is approved by voters. The County Commission will be forced to give up hard earned tax money to a nine-member, unelected, out of control, government bureaucracy. We believe this will lead to another sales tax increase for Walker County citizens. For these reasons and more the Walker County Property Owners PAC respectfully request the good citizens of Walker County to VOTE NO on Local Constitutional Amendment No. 1 in the November 2 election.
